Q: Will therapy show up on my insurance record?

A: If insurance pays, yes: billing requires a diagnosis code, which enters your claims history — same as any medical visit. What that means in practice: current health insurers can't charge you more or deny coverage for it (the ACA bans both), but claims data can surface in life, disability, and long-term-care insurance underwriting, which may ask about mental health history. Paying cash keeps therapy out of claims entirely — and note that superbills → put it back in, since they carry a diagnosis.

Worked example: weekly copays at $25 = $1,300/year with a claims record; a $90 associate cash = $4,680 with none. That $3,380 difference is what total claims-privacy costs — decide with real numbers, not vague dread.

Do this: ask your therapist how they'd approach diagnosis before the first claim goes out; it's a normal question.
