A: A PMHNP is a nurse practitioner with graduate psychiatric training who can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe psychiatric medication — the same core service most people want from a psychiatrist. In California, nurse practitioners meeting state requirements can practice with significant independence,¹ and in practice PMHNPs are where the appointments are: waits are typically shorter and cash fees lower (commonly $150–300 for intake, $100–200 for follow-ups, versus $300–500+ psychiatrist intakes).
