You're one of roughly 3 in 10 Angelenos on Medi-Cal. Therapy is covered — $0, no copay — and LA County runs the largest county mental health system in the country to deliver it.¹ The problem was never coverage. It's knowing which of the two doors is yours.
Door 1: Your plan card — L.A. Care or Health Net
LA is a "two-plan" county: almost every Medi-Cal member has L.A. Care or Health Net (or a plan partner like Blue Shield Promise or Molina under them). For anxiety, depression, grief, stress — the mild-to-moderate lane — call the member services number on your card:
"I'm requesting outpatient therapy. Please give me names of therapists taking new patients, and an appointment within 10 business days per the timely access standard."
The 10-business-day rule applies to Medi-Cal managed care.² If they blow past it, say "grievance," then DMHC Help Center 1-888-466-2219.
Door 2: The DMH Help Line — (800) 854-7771, 24/7
For heavier needs — or if you honestly can't tell how heavy it is — call the LA County Department of Mental Health Help Line: (800) 854-7771. It's answered 24/7, and since 2024 it handles mental health and substance use in one call.³ You do not need a referral. Say:
"I'd like a mental health screening and a referral to ongoing therapy. I have Medi-Cal."
What happens next: a screener asks about what's going on (15–20 minutes) → they match you to a DMH clinic or contracted provider near you → the clinic calls to book an intake. Under the state's No Wrong Door policy, if you called the wrong door for your needs, they connect you to the right one — they can't just tell you to call someone else.⁴
The insider fact: DMH's contracted network includes hundreds of community clinics with their own intake lines. If the Help Line match is slow, you can call a clinic directly from DMH's provider directory and say "I'm a Medi-Cal member seeking intake" — clinics can often screen you faster than the central queue.
Q&A
Q: How do I get free therapy with Medi-Cal in Los Angeles? A: Call the number on your plan card (L.A. Care or Health Net) for everyday needs, or the LA County DMH Help Line at (800) 854-7771 — 24/7 — for specialty care. Both are $0 with Medi-Cal, and the 10-business-day timely access rule applies.
